The Data Ethics Decision Aid (DEDA) is a toolkit developed by Utrecht University’s Data School, facilitating dialogic review and deliberation of value-sensitive design in data and AI projects. DEDA maps ethical issues in data projects, documenting the deliberation process and stimulates accountability towards the various stakeholders and the public.  Since its iterative development from 2016 to 2018, the DEDA framework has been utilized by numerous government organisations in the Netherlands and abroad.

DEDA has expanded internationally, now being available in English, German, Finnish, Swedish, and Greek. This seminar brings together researchers, educators and practitioners utilizing DEDA in different forms, for participatory observation, teaching, or developing value-sensitive design. The seminar is primarily focused on evaluating, exploring and advancing the use of DEDA in academic research and teaching contexts. Aspiring DEDA users are also very much welcome.

The seminar will have a special opening talk by Theo Röhle and Petter Falk. Our Finnish colleagues who were the first to implement DEDA outside of the Netherlands.

The rest of the seminar will be filled with 3 rounds of expertise-workshops:

  1. Research methods: Participatory observation with DEDA
What is the best practice for participatory observation? How do you structure fieldnotes? Are there methods for standardizing the processing of fieldnotes? How to ensure reproducibility?
  2. DEDA for Valorization: Stakeholder engagement with DEDA
How do you bring DEDA under the attention of stakeholders? How to create willingness to participate? How do you fund your DEDA activities? Do external stakeholders reimburse your costs? How do we create a diverse group of participants for DEDA sessions.
  3. Education: Teaching data ethics for students and professionals with DEDA
How do you use DEDA in education? What learning goals can you obtain by using DEDA in education? How do you measure/validate whether these learning goals are met? What assessment strategies do you use? Where or how can education with DEDA be improved?

We start each session by inviting our speakers to share their experiences within the subject area of the session, and answering a selection of the questions above. In the second part of each session, we will break out in discussion groups to go further in depth on the subject and therefore foster a collaborative, bi-directional discussion.
